Animal Control Officers Conduct
Rabies Outreach
Animal Control Officers are conducting a rabies education campaign, targeting neighborhoods where animals have recently tested positive for the rabies virus, including a cat in Lorton and raccoon in Springfield. The effort will continue over the next two weekends.
The operation began April 10 and, so far, out of around 120 homes visited, an average of only 50% of owners had up-to-date pet licenses and proper vaccinations.
Rabies is a deadly virus that is transferred through the blood or saliva of an infected animal. Vaccinations are mandatory for all dogs and cats. Even if your pet is an “indoor-only” pet, the threat of rabies virus transmission is very real. Rabies is carried by a number of animals that live here; including raccoons, foxes, skunks, bats and others.
So far in 2010, 11 animals have tested positive for the rabies virus in Fairfax County. In 2009 there were a total of 44 and in 2008 there were 39.
All dogs and cats four months of age and older must be inoculated against rabies. All dogs over four months of age must also be licensed. Failure to comply with these laws may result in fines. For more information, call the Animal Services Division at 703-830-1100.
This rabies canvass by Animal Control Officers is one of many efforts aimed at educating and protecting the public. April 11-18 is National Animal Control Officer Week; learn more about the valuable contributions these dedicated officers make to the community each day at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police.
