MEDIA ADVISORY
Meet Elizabeth; Fraud Victim
Elizabeth’s mother, just 65 years old, is in the early stages of dementia, living in Reston. She’s been receiving repeated phone calls telling her she’s won the lottery or that a relative was traveling out of the country and needed help. Unbeknownst to Elizabeth, her mother wired in excess of over $45,000.00 to various locations across the U.S. and Canada over the past few weeks. Additionally, someone used her mother’s credit card numbers and identity to open online accounts. Other than helping Elizabeth shut down her mother’s accounts, there is little police can do to heal the financial wounds are increasingly being inflicted on people like Elizabeth’s mother.
