“Lighting the Way” in Northern Virginia
Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run Passes through Northern Virginia
on Thursday, June 10
The Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefiting Special Olympics, will pass through the Northern Virginia area on Thursday, June 10. Runners will make their way to Richmond for the Special Olympics Virginia 2010 Summer Games, June 11-12. The Northern Virginia run will commence at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington County at 9:30 a.m. and will pass through several jurisdictions, ending at the Prince William County line on Richmond Highway around 3:30 p.m.
Colonel David M. Rohrer, Chief of the Fairfax County Police Department, is this year’s Northern Virginia Region Director. The region includes Alexandria Police, Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, Arlington County Police, Arlington County Sheriff’s Office, Falls Church Police, Fairfax City Police, Fairfax County Police, Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, Herndon Police, Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, Manassas Police, Metro Washington Airport Authority, NOVA Community College Police, Pentagon Police, Prince William County Police, Prince William County Sheriff’s Office, United States Park Police, Vienna Police, Army C.I.D., Fort Belvoir Military Police and Quantico Military Police.
Officers set out from seven points across the Commonwealth on June 4. By June 11, more than 2,000 officers will have carried the Special Olympics Flame of Hope more than 1,900 miles across Virginia. At 10 a.m. on Friday, June 11, officers from the Metro-Richmond area will gather at a Final Leg ceremony at the State Capitol and from there, more than 75 local law enforcement officers will run the final leg into the University of Richmond’s Robins Center. At 7:45 p.m., the officers will pass the Flame of Hope to a Special Olympics athlete, who will light the Olympic Cauldron and officially open this year’s Summer Games.
Now, in its 25th year, the Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run, sponsored by SunTrust and Macy’s, has raised more than $12.3 million for Special Olympics Virginia. However, for the 2,000 officers involved, it’s about more than carrying the torch for Special Olympics Virginia. It’s a mission; a serious commitment by the Virginia Law Enforcement community to pay homage to our heroes – the Special Olympics Virginia athletes and their families.
Everyone is invited to cheer the officers on as they make their way through the Northern Virginia Region. Several roads will temporarily close to accommodate the runners:
