Officer-Involved Shooting
in the Mount Vernon Area
Mount Vernon Police District – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred at an apartment in the 5700 block of Old Mill Court on Monday, May 28. Officers were serving a warrant for destruction of property on a 61-year-old man who lived inside of the apartment around 11:52 a.m.
Officers were familiar with the individual through prior police contacts. When officers knocked on the door, the door was opened and officers were confronted with a man armed with a knife. The man was non-compliant with orders to drop the weapon and was subsequently shot once in the upper body. Precise details are still under investigation. Officers rendered first aid at the scene and the man was flown to the Inova Fairfax Hospital where he is undergoing treatment for the wound.
There were four officers involved in the incident and the investigation will determine how many of them will be placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
Police are not identifying the man pending family notification.
