Fairfax County Police Officers take a proactive approach to keeping retail shopping centers safe during the busy holiday season. Over 40 officers are undergoing specialized training and will be deployed to the malls are areas starting this week. Both uniformed and undercover officers will be on the lookout for scams, swindlers, and criminal activity.
In 2011, officers deployed in the McLean Police District, for example made 83 arrests over the holiday shopping period; 63 felonies and 58 misdemeanors. They recovered $44,977 worth of stolen property and money. Fair Oaks District officers recovered $45,000. worth of stolen property, and working closely with store managers and loss prevention staff, made 77 felony charges and 107 misdemeanor charges. Officers served as a constant visual deterrent to shoplifters and other would-be criminals.
