Vehicle Fire with Arrest

            Franconia Police District – Police officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded for a vehicle fully engulfed in fire in the 5500 block of Cherokee Avenue on Saturday, May 18 at 11:19 p.m. Possible evidence was quickly identified and officers provided protection for fire fighters while they extinguished the flames. A handgun and gas can were located near the burning vehicle. The vehicle was parked in front of a business building which had apparent gunshot holes in the glass. No one was injured.

            A suspect was quickly developed. Following an investigation, Matthew Mehfar, 30, of 5112 Observation Way, Alexandria, was charged with shooting in public, arson, enter an alarmed building, damage public property, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Mehfar was transported to the Adult Detention Center.
