Be Mindful of Heat-related Dangers

In light of recent incidents around the region, Fairfax County reminds residents and motorists of dangers involving children and hot cars.

With the National Weather Service forecasts involving  potentially dangerous combinations of heat and humidity all week, this may mean life-threatening conditions for children  left in vehicles or other unsuitable environments; even for short time periods.

According to the Kids and Cars organization, please remember the following tips:

  • Never leave children alone in a vehicle; not even for a minute. Body temperatures in children rise 3-5 times faster than in adults. On a warm day, temperatures can rapidly rise to dangerous levels. If you see a child in distress in a parked car, contact police immediately.
  • Make arrangements in advance with your child’s daycare or babysitter that you will always call if your child is not there on a particular day as scheduled.
  • Recognize the symptoms of heatstroke. If your child shows signs such as heavy breathing, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, fever, dizziness, restlessness, excessive thirst, contact your physician immediately or call 9-1-1. Take steps to reduce the child’s body temperature immediately.
