Fairfax County Animal Shelter is Accepting Dogs, Adoption Floor Open

Starting Tuesday, July 30, the Fairfax County Animal Shelter is again accepting dogs.

Last week, the Shelter suspended intake of dogs due to a suspected outbreak of Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), after one dog died and a dozen others fell ill.

Initial test results are negative for CIV and all of the sick dogs are improving. Dogs that have been exposed to this illness have been moved to a contained area, where they will remain isolated from other dogs until they are cleared for adoption by the Shelter’s veterinarian.

The Shelter is open for intake and adoptions of dogs, cats and other animals. The entire Shelter has been cleaned and sanitized so pets can safely enter the Shelter without being exposed to upper respiratory illness.

Thursday, August 1, marks the beginning of a month-long adoption promotion that includes half-off adoption fees for all dogs and puppies. Shelter staff plans to have the adoption floor stocked with healthy, available dogs by Wednesday.
