FCPD Traffic Safety Efforts Recognized

Including Traffic Safety Officer of the Year

awards

Fairfax County Police Department personnel and programs were recently awarded honors by two prestigious law enforcement organizations which evaluate police traffic safety programs across the Commonwealth, and the nation.

The Virginia Association of the Chiefs of Police (VACP) and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) recognized top traffic safety enforcement and awareness programs at an awards program held last week in Williamsburg.

PFC Michael D. Mittiga, from the Mount Vernon Police District, was recognized as the overall Traffic Safety Officer of the Year for 2012. PFC Mittiga demonstrated exceptional leadership in and dedication to traffic safety during the past year. In addition to managing station projects on child seat safety and pedestrian crossing awareness programs, he also cited a total of 1,610 summonses for traffic safety infractions; including the arrests of 142 reckless drivers, 51 felony arrests, and 404 seatbelt violations.

The Motor Carrier Safety Program also won a “special award” for its solid enforcement and safety efforts involving trucks and commercial vehicles in Fairfax County.  FCPD Motor Carrier Safety (MCS) detectives inspect commercial vehicles within Fairfax County borders and routinely remove unsafe vehicles from the roadways. MCS Officers are certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation and have received specific training from the Office of Federal Motor Carriers. Each of these officers is equipped with tools, towing equipment and chainsaws to respond to calls involving these large, heavy vehicles.
