Walk with Us; Bring Your Dog
7TH Annual K-9 Krawl October 19;
Recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Did you know that 71% of pet-owning women entering shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims? Or that between 25 and 40% of battered women are unable to escape abusive situations because they worry about what will happen to their pets or livestock if they leave?
In observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Fairfax County Police Department’s Victim Services Section is sponsoring their annual 5K walk created to raise awareness of issues surrounding domestic violence.
The Annual K-9 Krawl remembers those that have been victimized by domestic abuse and celebrates those that have survived, along with a public reminder that pets are not immune to domestic violence. not i Batterers often threaten, injure, maim, or kill their partners’ pets for the purpose of revenge or control within relationships.
The Krawl is FREE and all are welcome. Bring your dog or borrow one from a friend, although walkers are not required to have a canine companion to participate.
Join members of the Fairfax County Police Department, including an FCPD K-9 demonstration, for this special event that includes a D.J., goodie bags, and domestic violence resource tables. There will also be an opportunity to have your pet’s portrait taken by a professional photographer, available for a $10.00 donation.
