New Awareness Tools Keep Public Informed

Follow FCPD News Now

Keep Fairfax County safe and stay updated on the latest public safety information in Fairfax County with two new tools being launched by the FCPD Public Information Office.

The new FCPD News blog is replacing the traditional “news release.” As of April 1, the agency will no longer email releases; all information will be posted on the new, easy-to-read blog. Residents are urged to subscribe to the blog at http://fcpdnews.wordpress.com/ today. All releases will immediately be pushed to the agency’s Twitter feed. The Public Information Office issues dozens of releases each year, covering crime, traffic issues, public events, community concerns, trends and a wide variety of other relevant and important safety issues. All of this information will now be found in one spot; the News blog.

Additionally, police have launched a new crime mapping tool. It is designed to help users better understand where police are responding, and offers users a general description of the incident. Developed in conjunction with the Fairfax County Department of Information Technology’s GIS branch, the new crime mapping application will be a valuable asset for residents, neighborhood civic associations, businesses, and anyone who wants to know the latest police-related events in their neighborhoods. Simply log on to  http://www.fairfaxcounty/policeevents/, type the address of the location, and all police-related events within a specific radius will populate the screen. Information is, typically, a day behind real-time events. Users may inquire about any location they like; their child’s school, a local business district, a potential area they’d like to move. The new tool provides help to users when making important decisions.

These new additional public safety information tools join others already in place, such as the online crime reporting system, which was updated and improved in late 2013. Residents are encouraged to report all non-emergency crimes/incidents at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/120413citizenreportingsystem.htm.

For more information on these new tools or other public safety information, call the Public Information Office at 703-246-2253 or email FCPD PIO@fairfaxcounty.gov.
