The Fairfax County Police Department may be the answer to these questions and your future career. The Cadet Program is designed to provide law enforcement training and experience to persons between the ages of 18 and 20 at the time of appointment who are interested in pursuing a career with the Fairfax County Police Department. Cadet applicants may apply and be scheduled to take the written exam if they are within 120 days of their 18th birthday. Experience:

As of July 2007, the starting salary for a Police Cadet is $24,749 to $32,998. Those who successfully complete the Cadet program, and pass additional tests, can then move on to the rank of Police Officer. The minimum age to be a Police Officer is 21, and the current starting salary for a Fairfax County Police Officer is $45,741. The Cadet Program is administered by the Cadet Coordinator at the Criminal Justice Academy. The Cadet Coordinator schedules all assignments and training in cooperation with rotation assignment supervisors. Cadets rotate through a series of temporary assignments, usually for 120-day periods. While on temporary assignment, Cadets answer directly to their temporary supervisors for routine scheduling, leave, and assignment related activities.
