School Faculty Interrupts Gang Initiation
Students Facing Charges
A gang initiation was discovered and stopped at Hayfield High School at 7630 Telegraph Road on Thursday, March 22. A member of the school faculty found and detained several students in one of the bathrooms. School Security and the School Resource Officer responded immediately to investigate. Gang Unit detectives responded and investigation has revealed that the total of four female students, ages 15 to 17 , and four male students, also ages 15 to 17 had voluntarily undergone a gang initiation. These initiations had occurred over several days.
The students conducting the initiation were two 17-year-old males, a 16-year-old male and a 16-year-old female. These four teenagers are being charged with;
1. Gang recruitment on school grounds (felony)
2. Gang participation (felony)
3. Hazing (misdemeanor)
All the teenagers involved in this incident are students of Hayfield High School. There are no middle school students involved. None of the students involved in the initiations sustained serious injuries and no weapons were used. Preliminary investigation reveals this was an isolated incident by a small group of students wanting to increase membership of a gang. School faculty and security detected the incident and summoned police immediately.
Gang prevention, intervention and suppression continues to be a coordinated priority in Fairfax County.
