Crackdown on Drunk Driving in Fairfax County

The Fairfax County Police Department is working hard to promote a safe and sober holiday season. The Safe December program, running from November 27, through December 21, was launched with the purpose of educating the public about the dangers of irresponsible alcohol use and underage alcohol purchases.

A select group of officers have been chosen to form a team with the primary purpose of identifying and arresting drunk drivers. These officers will saturate specific areas of the County in the evening and night time hours.  Weekly alcohol directed patrols and DWI checkpoints will be conducted with possibly more than one checkpoint per weekend during the “Safe December” campaign. In addition, police cadets in plain clothing will attempt to purchase alcohol from retail and restaurant establishments across the county to thwart sales to underage drinkers.

Captain Susan Culin, Commander of the Traffic Division, said “During 2006, alcohol related crashes killed 24 people and injured 705 in Fairfax County alone. If you plan to drink during the holidays, plan ahead and don't make the mistake of driving impaired. Your life, your future and the lives of others depend on your decision to not drive under the influence.”
