Fairfax County Police Department Franconia Station Bike TeamThe bike team is formally known as the Franconia Station Neighborhood Patrol Unit, and with the unofficial start to the summer, you will see police officers on bicycles more often. This team is operational and staffed all year-round performing a variety functions, but with the warm weather they have the opportunity to use their specialized training – patrolling on a police mountain bike. These officers attend a week long course with instruction on riding a bicycle while on police patrol and how to respond to any event. The classes include obstacle courses, cone courses, long distance riding and bike maintenance. The newest member of the Franconia District Station bike team is Police Officer First Class Tim Wallace who recently received a Fairfax County Crime Solvers Pinnacle Award. PFC Wallace was asked why he joined the bike team and responded, “I want to expand my knowledge of complex investigations as well as gain experience in more tactically intricate situations. I have learned that NPU is often called upon by station personnel and other divisions within the department to assist with surveillance, plain clothes and more serious arrest situations. I believe these physical and mental challenges will prepare me for future assignments within the department.” Captain Shawn Bennett, Commander, Franconia Station stated, “The Franconia Station Neighborhood Patrol Unit is a valuable station resource to me and Lieutenant Smith [Assistant Commander, Franconia Station]. This unit handles a broad range of assignments from community outreach to aggressive criminal patrols, spending most of their time on police bicycles.” The team has six officers and is led by Second Lieutenant Jennifer Lescallett.
