Fairfax County Police Department Dangerous Trucks Removed from Highways
On Saturday, March 24 from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., members of the Motor Carrier Safety Unit for the Fairfax County Police Department were conducting inspections of commercial trucks in the Franconia District. They stopped vehicles including truck tractors pulling semitrailers, dump trucks, landscape trucks and trailers, and trucks with oversize loads. The purpose of the stops was to identify unsafe equipment violations, or infractions involving driver’s licenses, registrations and weight. Captain Shawn Bennett, consistently concerned with reducing dangerous crashes, stated, "A considerable number of large trucks operate on the highways of the Franconia District on a daily basis. In my time here as Commander, I have worked closely with Captain Susan Culin of the Police Department's Traffic Division to assign resources to monitor and inspect these large trucks for safety violations and road worthiness. These efforts support my overall traffic safety goals by creating a safe environment for large trucks and passenger vehicles to operate together on our highways." Fourteen vehicles were stopped and inspected. Ten of those 14 were taken out of service and removed from the highway for safety reasons. A total of 23 summonses were issued.
