MPO Paul Bennett Recognized
Master Police Officer Paul Bennett was recognized by Captain Shawn Bennett, Franconia Station Commander, on May 11 for actions taken by MPO Bennett on March 25.
While MPO Paul Bennett and Police Officer First Class Brandon Blymer were conducting a multiple vehicle search after dark at Pohick Estates Park, a pickup truck entered the park. The driver ignored orders to stop and instead made a U-turn and exited the park at high speed. MPO Bennett got in his cruiser and followed the truck. When he activated his emergency equipment, the truck fled and a pursuit was initiated. The driver drove recklessly along the major Route 1 thoroughfare and at one point drove into head-on traffic.
The driver eventually drove to his residence, exited the vehicle and, when challenged, put his hands on the hood in apparent compliance. However, when MPO Bennett approached, the driver turned and took an aggressive stance. A struggle ensued in the dark driveway as family members exited the nearby house. MPO Bennett instructed the family to stay inside and they complied. The struggle continued and MPO Bennett was able to handcuff the driver although he continued to struggle even after backup units arrived. The suspect was found to be intoxicated and had several rocks of crack cocaine. He was charged with possession of cocaine, felony speed to elude, resisting arrest, driving on a suspended license, DWI, DWI refusal, reckless driving and trespassing in a park after dark.
MPO Bennett’s determination and application of police skills acquired through training and experience enabled him to successfully pursue, subdue and arrest the subject under difficult and potentially dangerous circumstances.
