SRO Summer Assignment
|
Fairfax County Police Department SRO Summer AssignmentSchool Resource Officers (SROs) are assigned to middle and high schools throughout the county during the school year. They provide a great service to the students, faculty and staff. During the summer months, most schools are virtually empty, so the officers assigned to those schools perform a variety of other assignments within the department. This past summer here in the Franconia Police District four SROs maintained their focus on the kids. Master Police Officers Hariston and Coffield and Police Officers First Class Dellow and Robertson are the SROs at Mark Twain MS, Francis Scott Key MS, Robert E. Lee HS and Edison HS respectively. They began their summer by speaking with various business owners and distributing posters and stickers for underage drinking prevention. These officers frequented known summer hangout areas for the teens and interacted regularly with old and prospective students. In some cases the contact was informal and positive, and in other cases the officers took legal action. Arrests were made for petit larceny, possession of tobacco by a minor, trespass, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, arson, drunk in public, and possession of alcohol under 21. Countless other minor infractions were made where parents were called to pick up their child. In one case, the officers learned of a house party before it was to take place. The parents were notified, and the party did not occur. This summer assignment was an extension of how well the SROs interact with the children in their schools; sometimes mentoring, sometimes disciplining, and always caring.
