Fairfax County Police Department Officer of the 4th Quarter Award
Police Officers First Class Ryan Lazisky and Chris Crawford were selected as the Officers of the Fourth Quarter at the Franconia District Station for actions taken on December 21, 2011. PFC Lazisky and PFC Crawford were assigned to the Springfield Mall during the busy 2011 holiday season to assist local merchants in successfully catching and prosecuting retail thieves. On Wednesday December 21, the officers were dispatched to a vehicle tampering report at the Home Depot on Frontier Drive. On their way, the officers noticed two men (one with a backpack) walking away from the parking garage. The two officers approached the suspects and conducted a voluntary interview. They asked where the suspects obtained a backpack since they saw them earlier without one. Not having a reasonable answer, the officers continued to build a comfortable rapport with the suspects and asked to see inside the bag. The suspects consented and showed the officers they had some electronics and an empty gun holster. Upon arriving at Home Depot, they learned the car was broken into. The same electronics the suspects had were being reported stolen. The officers quickly located the suspects again, and detained them. After being searched, the officers located the stolen items and a loaded handgun. The suspects were arrested and interviewed. The suspects confessed to breaking into cars, and two homes. In all, four cases were closed. Officers Lazisky and Crawford did more on December 21, 2011, than take two criminals off the street and return property to the owners. By staying alert, and not letting small clues pass without investigation, they helped lessen the impact a victim feels when the sanctity of their home is violated. With the perpetrators arrested, the victims can begin the healing process to feel comfortable in their home and have confidence that their police department is there when needed.
