Sully District Officer of the Year: PFC Roy Choe

Sully Police District - Officer Roy Choe has been selected as 2011 Officer of the Year by Citizens Advisory Committee of the Sully Police District.

PFC Choe, originally from Korea, has been a member of the Fairfax County Police Department since 2005. In a county where over 17 percent of the residents are Asian, Choes’s exceptional language and interpretation skills have proved to be an invaluable public safety asset.

In 2011, Choe assisted the Bureau of Criminal Investigation with two homicide investigations, was assigned to the regional Human Trafficking Task Force, and translated hundreds of pages of documents; often on short notice. He assisted fellow officers with their cases and questions as well. According to Choe, there are many cultural differences and nuances that may need to be clarified in different enforcement situations. Choe has helped the Korean community understand some of these by building relationships with leadership and members of many churches, such as the Korean Presbyterian Church in Centreville. With approximately 4,600 parishioners each week, Choe often helps explain situations such as crime trends and the significance and importance of various traffic safety laws.

PFC Choe’s skills are widely recognized throughout the community. Officials from the Korean Embassy reached out to Choe when they needed someone to address the Korean-American community on the financial fraud victimization of Asians across the region.

According to Sully District commanders, Lieutenant John Trace and Captain Purvis Dawson, PFC Choe has done an outstanding job of helping the FCPD forge better relationships with the Korean-American community along with provided outstanding law enforcement effort and support to his fellow officers and community members.
