Police Hold Sexting Forum
Sexting: Don’t Play That Game
Almost
50 percent of all teens surveyed have received or sent inappropriate
photos via cell phone. Could your child be one of them?
If you missed the Fairfax County Police Department community forums on sexting (sending racy photos via cell phone), the following safety tips were offered to the adults who are concerned about teens:
-
Set ground rules for use of wireless devices (consider limiting cell
phone use)
- Monitor wireless activity (contact online and phone companies)
- Know who your children (or the young people that you care about) are communicating with via phone and online
- Consider blocking internet access/text messaging features on cell phones
- Learn how to use and understand the same technology/communications devices that your children are using
-
Know all passwords and pin numbers
- Talk to children about what to do if they receive explicit messages
- Discuss consequences
- “Google” your child’s name and see what comes up; this could make a good place to begin your conversation
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children joined forces with Fairfax County police officers to address the group’s questions on laws and consequences surrounding inappropriate cell phone use. Future forums are planned, so keep your eye on www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police for details.
Remember,
School Resource Officers (SRO) are assigned to each Fairfax County Public
high school and are available to hear your
questions or concerns.
The Fairfax County Police Department will continue to build upon education and outreach efforts on this important community issue. With rapid changes in technology, police urge concerned parents and loved ones need to maintain awareness and keep in touch.
