Fairfax County Police officers reach out to the public to help educate them on a wide variety of traffic safety laws and issues. Some of the more common questions officers receive from the public include:

Can my teenager drive after midnight ?

What are the restrictions on passengers in my teen’s car?

Does the Fairfax County Police Department have any safe driving education programs?

 

Can my teenager drive after midnight ?

Virginia’s curfew laws prohibit drivers under the age of 18 who hold a learner’s permit or driver’s license from driving between midnight - 4 a.m. Exceptions include:

  • In case of emergency
  • When traveling to and from work or a school-sponsored event
  • When accompanied by a parent or other adult acting in place of a parent
  • When responding to an emergency call as a volunteer firefighter or rescue squad member

What are the restrictions on passengers in my teen’s car?

If under the age of 18, drivers may:

  • Have only one passenger during the first year you hold your driver’s license
  • After one year, until you reach age 18, you may carry only three passengers under age 18 (this does not include family members)
  • Violations of these restrictions can result in license suspension
