Traffic Safety Education

 Traffic Safety Education

Fairfax County Police officers reach out to the public to help educate them on a wide variety of traffic safety laws and issues. Some of the more common questions officers receive from the public include:

Can my teenager drive after midnight ?

What are the restrictions on passengers in my teen’s car?

Does the Fairfax County Police Department have any safe driving education programs?

Can my teenager drive after midnight ?

Virginia’s curfew laws prohibit drivers under the age of 18 who hold a learner’s permit or driver’s license from driving between midnight - 4 a.m. Exceptions include:

  • In case of emergency
  • When traveling to and from work or a school-sponsored event
  • When accompanied by a parent or other adult acting in place of a parent
  • When responding to an emergency call as a volunteer firefighter or rescue squad member

What are the restrictions on passengers in my teen’s car?

Restrictions on the Number of Passengers

If you are under age 18 and you turn age 17 after July 1, 2013, you may carry only one passenger under age 21, unless accompanied by a licensed parent, or other adult acting in place of a parent, in the front passenger seat. However, after you have held your license for one year, you may carry up to three passengers under age 21 in the following situations:

    •Travel to and from a school-sponsored activity,
•A licensed driver 21 or older is in the front passenger seat, or
    •There is an emergency.

If you are under age 18 and you turn age 17 on or before July 1, 2013, you may carry only one passenger under age 18 for the first year after your license is issued. However, after you have held your license for one year, you may carry up to three passengers under age 18.

(Passenger restrictions do not apply to family members and are lifted when you turn 18.)

Learner’s permit holders may not carry more than one passenger under age 18.

Violations of either the curfew or passenger restrictions can result in the suspension of your driver's license.
