AUXILIARY POLICE UNIT

The Fairfax County Police Department Auxiliary Police Unit is seeking volunteers. The unit consists of unpaid volunteers who are trained to perform a variety of operational support and administrative assignments within the Police Department. Some of the duties performed by Fairfax County auxiliary officers are:

  • Patrol
  • Traffic control
  • Security of prisoners
  • Communications
  • Desk assignments
  • Fingerprinting
  • Crime Prevention
  • Special events

Prior to being sworn as an Auxiliary Police Officer, each applicant must complete a comprehensive training program over a period of several months. The Police Department supplies uniforms and equipment upon successful completion of training. Auxiliary officers must perform 24 hours of volunteer service every month to maintain status in the unit.

Availability for training and service in the evenings, on weekends, and holidays is required. While on duty, auxiliary officers are covered by risk insurance provided and paid for by the Fairfax County government. Auxiliary Police Unit applicants must be:

  • at least 21 years of age at date of appointment.
  • a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien with application for naturalization filed and pending with I.N.S.
  • a resident of Northern Virginia
  • not currently employed in any position presenting a potential conflict of interest
  • not currently an applicant for police officer in any jurisdiction
  • in good health and willing to submit to a physical examination, drug test, applicant written test and polygraph
  • without a criminal record or history of drug usage

Selection of candidates is based on an overall assessment of each applicant's qualifications, background and availability to support Fairfax County Police Department activities during periods of greatest need.

VOLUNTEERS IN POLICE SERVICES (VIPS)

The VIPS mission is to provide administrative augmentation to the Police Department by utilizing the skills of non-salaried, non-uniformed volunteers. The selection, appointment and tenure of VIPS personnel will be determined by the Chief of Police.
To be eligible, VIPS personnel must be:

  • at least 21 years of age
  • be in good physical health
  • pass a police background check
  • pass an interview with police supervisors

There is no maximum age limit for service in this program, provided the individual is physically fit to perform the duties assigned.

Every effort will be made to assign volunteers according to their desires and the needs of the Department.
