JOINT
BOARD MATTER
Recipients
of DAR Good Citizen Awards
April 4, 2005
Mr. Chairman: It has come to my attention
that two students in two Fairfax County schools in two
magisterial districts have been awarded the Daughters
of the American Revolution (DAR) Award by its Fairfax
County Chapter.
Mary
Frances Gibson organized the Fairfax County Chapter,
almost one hundred years ago, on October 14, 1905 at
Vienna, Virginia. Named for the County of Fairfax, it
was the second DAR chapter in northern Virginia. On
March 4, 2005 - the Fairfax County Chapter of (DAR)
gave its annual Good Citizen Awards to Byeri Kim of
Oakton High School and to Lisa Marie Hughes of Madison
High School. At the awards ceremony, the two students
read their winning essays "Our American Heritage
and Our Responsibility for Preserving It." Kim,
who emigrated from Korea five years ago, emphasized
on "Freedom It Not Free." Lisa, who talked
about her immigrant grandparents, focused on "Traditions
in America."
Lisa
Marie Hughes and Byeri Kim exemplify the standards of
excellence of students in our public schools. Supervisor
Hudgins and I are very proud to share their accomplishments
with you and commend the two students for their contributions
to their schools, DAR and community. Therefore, I move
that the Board direct the Office of Public Affairs prepare
certificates of recognition for the two awardees.
