Recognition
of Marshall High School's Field Hockey Team
Mr.
Chairman:
The
Marshall High School Field Hockey Team won the Northern
Region Championship in 2005. While not even qualifying
for the regional tournament last season, this year the
team was the Cinderella story of the falls sports season.
They shocked the region by going 19-6 and winning the
Northern Region Championship on November 3. They did
this in overtime, beating the three-time defending champion
Woodson 2-1 - and we think the Redskins keep our hearts
in our throats.
The
victory was not only Marshall's first-ever in field
hockey but it was also the first region crown for the
school in any team sport since 1987. The team won in
the first round of the Virginia AAA state tournament
by a score of 5-0. They lost in the semifinal round
to the defending state champion. They finished the season
ranked third in the state of Virginia. Additionally,
they were awarded the Virginia High School League Sportsmanship
award for the AAA classification.
Their
seventh year coach, Christina Carroll, only missed one
game to have a baby midseason. She earned the Region
Coach of the Year honors for her performance and certainly
our admiration as well. Standout players included senior
Sam Mills and junior Gina Cappiello, both first-team
all-region selections. Stand-out senior Sam Mills was
also honored as all metropolitan in 2005.
Motion:
In
recognition of the Marshall High School Field Hockey
Team for their victorious year by winning the Northern
Region Championship, I move that the Board of Supervisors
invite the Team and their Coach to come before the Board
to formally commemorate their hard fought achievement.
