BOARD MATTER

Supervisor Linda Q. Smyth

February 23, 2004

Mr. Chairman: The RideSources Metrochek Program for Fairfax County Government employees was established in 1993. The program provides, to qualified employees, a Metrochek, currently up to $60 per month, to the employee to use for their transit (bus and rail) and van pool commute to work. The Metrochek cost is the responsibility of the county. The program currently has participants from the Government Center Complex and the Public Safety Complex.

Metrochek is a strategy, along with such work options as Telework and flexible schedules, that county government can offer its employees to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the region.

Mr. Chairman, I believe that it is time to expand the program to employees at additional work sites around the county and to clarify that the program is open to full time merit, limited term, and exempt county employees. Therefore, I ask that the County Executive report back to the Board on how to expand, promote and fund the Metrochek Program for County employees.
