Oakton
Library Groundbreaking and Community Day
Mr. Chairman:
As
you are aware, the groundbreaking for the Oakton Library,
the first library in the Providence District, is scheduled
for April 8, 2006. Community leaders in Oakton and the
Oakton Women's Club generated community support and
enthusiasm for designation of a part of a parcel of
vacant land in Oakton for the library site. This land
was owned by Hearthstone-Vanguard and in a historic
public-private partnership the land for the 3-acre project
was donated for the purpose of building the Oakton library.
The Friends of the Oakton Library was founded in 2001
and the planning and design of the library began in
2002 with an estimated cost of $7.6 million. In 2004,
the voters of Fairfax County approved a bond referendum
to fund the new library and under the leadership of
Library Director Edwin Clay and Fairfax County Department
of Public Works and Environmental Services Architect
Katayoon Shaya as well as the Friends of the Oakton
Library, plans and construction documents were developed.
Designed to be state-of-the-art and environmentally
sound, the building will employ various LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) principles, including
orienting the building to maximize energy efficiency,
installing a highly efficient mechanical system and
using daylight and screening to offset energy consumption.
The site of the new library is at the intersection of
Hunter Mill Road and Lynnhaven Place - near the intersection
of Route 123 and Hunter Mill Road - and is projected
to open in May 2007.
Motion:
To
recognize the positive contributions of Library Director
Edwin Clay, DPWES Architect Katayoon Shaya as well as
the Friends of the Oakton Library and the Oakton Women's
Club, I move that the Board of Supervisors invite these
individuals to come before the Board on April 3, 2006,
to formally commemorate their contributions.
Further,
I ask the Board for unanimous support in proclaiming
Saturday, April 8, 2006, as "Oakton Community Day"
in Fairfax County and direct staff to prepare a proclamation
to be read at the celebration.
