JOINT
BOARD MATTER
With Supervisor Gerry Hyland
POTOMAC
RIVER RUN MARATHON AND HALF-MARATHON DAY
April
25, 2005
Mr. Chairman:
Runners,
from at least four countries and twenty two states as
well as Fairfax County residents, will participate in
the second annual Potomac River Marathon - which is
26.2 miles - and Half-Marathon - which is 13.1 miles
- on May 1, 2005. This marathon will start at sunrise
at Belle Haven Park and head down and back on the Mount
Vernon Trail along the Potomac River and through the
woods of George Washington Memorial Parkway. Other natural
and historical points visible from the course include
Dyke Marsh, Riverside Park and Fort Hunt Park.
The
Greater Washington Sports Alliance notes in reference
to the visionaries of this event that: "This event
shows why the Washington D.C. region is so great for
sports." Last year's event received a perfect five-star
rating for the course and organization from participants
who shared their opinions with MarathonGuide.com. Furthermore,
the marathon benefits Special Olympics, the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation and other members of the Metro DC-area Marathon
Charity Partners.
Therefore,
I move that the Board show unanimous support for this
event by proclaiming May 1, 2005 as "POTOMAC RIVER
RUN MARATHON AND HALF-MARATHON DAY" as follows:
WHEREAS, the first annual Potomac River Run Marathon
and Half-Marathon was conducted in Fairfax County on
May 2, 2004, drawing participants from 16 States, the
District of Columbia, and three foreign countries; and
WHEREAS, the 2004 Potomac River Run Marathon earned
two five-star (top) ratings for course and organization
from participants via MarathonGuide.com; and
WHEREAS, the 2004 Potomac River Run Marathon and Half-Marathon
donated $2,500 to local and national charities; and
WHEREAS, 200 runners from 22 States, the District of
Columbia, and Army Europe will participate in the second
annual Potomac River Run Marathon and Half Marathon
on Sunday, May 1, 2005; and
WHEREAS, the Potomac River Run Marathon and Half-Marathon
shows off the natural beauty of Fairfax County, exposing
runners to natural and historic views along the Potomac
River, George Washington Memorial Parkway, and Mount
Vernon Trail; and
WHEREAS, the Potomac River Run Marathon is the only
26.2-mile full-distance marathon conducted in Fairfax
County; and
WHEREAS, the Potomac River Run Marathon and Half-Marathon
includes a College of Running Educational Expo on Saturday,
April 30, 2005, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Courtyard by
Marriott hotel that is free and open to the public;
and
WHEREAS, the Surgeon General of the United States prescribes
a minimum of 10,000 steps per day for good health; and
WHEREAS, the Potomac River Run Marathon and Half-Marathon
coincides with and celebrates World Laughter Day, Sunday,
May 1, 2005;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Fairfax County
Board of Supervisors, on behalf of all citizens of Fairfax
County, does hereby proclaim Sunday, May 1, 2005, as
