Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Retention Rain Garden

Supervisor Smyth thanked Michael Aho, former staff member, for envisioning, initiating and leading the project. She further thanked her staff members, Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, Virginia Department Conservation and Recreation, Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and the private partners who have contributed to this project. This collaborative low impact development (LID) project is to become the first demonstrative project of its kind in Fairfax County which will provide residents, county agencies, environmentalists, land developers and planners with educational and informational materials on best management practices in LID techniques.

The event was attended by Delegate Steve Shannon (35th District); Chairman Phil Niedzielski-Eichner (Fairfax County School Board); Sally Ormsby (Member Board of Directors, Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District); Jimmie Jenkins (Director, Department of Public Works and Environmental Services), Ron Tuttle and other members of county agencies; Commissioner Ken Lawrence (Providence District); Keesha Cheeks and Sarah King (Department of Conservation and Recreation); as well as members of the Merrifield Fire Station and the community.

This is the second phase of the three part low impact development (LID) project to be conducted as part of the DCR grant project located at the Providence Supervisor's Office. The third phase of this project - the Permeable Pavers Projects - will shortly follow the second project. More information on the first phase of this project - Green Roof Project - is available below.
