BOARD
MATTER
December
6, 2004
Mr.
Chairman: It is with great pleasure that I notify my
colleagues and the public of an outstanding achievement.
Earlier this year, Michael Aho of my staff discussed
an idea with me - that of applying for a Department
of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) grant for low impact
development at our office site. As you know, the Providence
Supervisor's office is adjacent to Fire Station 30 and
at present, has only one storm drain for the property.
Earlier
this fall my office was notified of the $40,000 grant
that was awarded to our grant team. The team consists
of staff from my office, the Department of Public Works
and Environmental Services - including Stormwater Management,
Stormwater Planning and Facilities Management - and
also the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation
District.
The
project, entitled "Demonstrating Innovation: A
Stormwater Retrofit at the Providence Supervisor's Office,"
will serve as a demonstration project for three low
impact development/best management practices techniques:
a green roof, a retention rain garden and permeable
pavers.

see the article
I wrote on the reverse of this page
and also note the Action item (A1) in today's Board
package. I look forward to the Board's approval of our
grant program.
