JOINT BOARD MATTER
With Supervisor Dana Kauffman (Lee District)
June 26, 2006
AAA School Safety Patrol Awards Program

Mr. Chairman:

The Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education’s Outstanding AAA School Safety Patrol Awards Program recognizes the most outstanding school safety patrols in eighteen jurisdictions around the Washington metropolitan area. Selection criteria include leadership, dependability, academics, promptness, neatness and industriousness.

Miss Ariel Lu, a 6th grader at Fairhill Elementary School and Miss Breanne Coughlin, a 6th grader at Clermont Elementary, were among 18 safety patrols from the 35,000 in the entire Washington metro area selected to receive the AAA Outstanding School Safety Patrol of the Year for the 2005 - 2006 school year. On June 1, 2006, the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education, which is a non-profit organization funded by members of AAA Mid-Atlantic, Inc., provided each student with a plaque commemorating his or her exemplary accomplishments and $150 in U.S. savings bonds during a special ceremony at the Hyatt Regency in Reston.

Each of these safety patrols are at their posts daily, protecting their classmates on the way to and from school. The Fairfax County Police Department assigns full-time officers to work with these patrols. Each of these safety patrols, and the Police Officers and school officials, who work with them, deserve our appreciation and we thank each of you.

Therefore, Mr. Chairman, I move that the Board invite Miss Ariel Lu, Miss Breanne Coughlin, representatives from their respective schools, the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education representatives as well as the Fairfax County police department representatives to come before the Board and receive a Certificate of Recognition at their next meeting on July 10, 2006.
