Master Gardener

Mr. Chairman:

The Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association, Inc. is a nonprofit organization of volunteers who receive training under the auspices of Virginia and Fairfax County Cooperative Extension offices. The first class of Fairfax County Master Gardeners graduated on March 25, 1976 - almost thirty years ago.

The Master Gardeners provide research-based horticultural information, tips, techniques and advice to the community through Plant Clinics. The Plant Clinics are held in various locations, such as farmer's markets and our public libraries, throughout the county during the months of April through September. Residents can also access the Plant Clinic through the Diagnostic Laboratory that is available to the public all year long. At these clinics, volunteers' diagnosis plant diseases and insect problems; advise about lawn and plant care; identify plants and weeds; suggest plants for problem areas; and provide other information relating to the landscaping.

The Master Gardener program and service offers an invaluable resource for county residents. The time and commitment of the volunteers who make sure that these resources are available are to be highly commended for their dedication and passion.

Therefore, I move for the Board's unanimous support, in proclaiming March 25 as "Master Gardener Day" in Fairfax County. Furthermore, I move that we invite Master Gardeners to the March 13, 2006 Board meeting to be recognized for their service to our community.
