Food Drive, coordinated with Supervisor
Smyth's office and the Capital Area Food Bank
Location:
8739 Lee Highway, Fairfax, Virginia 22031 (Supervisor's
office)
Drop
off time: October 18 - October 24 - 24 hours
a day.
Please
stop by the office, meet the Supervisor and
her staff (Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) and bring
a non-perishable item to donate to the Capital
Area Food Bank.

6.
Winter Clothes Collection, coordinated
with the Human Services Council
and the Mantua Elementary School PTA
Location:
Providence District Public Schools drop off
(please check with your school to see if they
have a drop box).
Time:
October 18 - October 23 during school hours
and all day October 23.
The
Fairfax County Human Services Council will be
conducting a clothes drive that will benefit
area shelters. Due to the mid-winter shortages
of children's socks, gloves, scarves and hats;
the Council is requesting donations of new items.

2.
Book Sale/Bond Referendum Information, coordinated
with the Friends of Oakton Library
Location:
2854 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton, Virginia 22124
(Unity of Fairfax Church)
Time:
October 23 from 10 a.m. -3 p.m.
The
Friends of the Oakton Library are requesting
donations of books for their book sale drive.
Books can be dropped off at the Church at 9
a.m. on October 23 or by appointment (call the
Supervisor's office).

7.
Archiving old photographs, coordinated
with the James Lee Community Center
and the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation
Location:
2855 -A James Lee Street, Falls Church (off
of Annandale Road - computer club house).
Time:
10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The
Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation, in conjunction
with the James Lee Community Center, will be
documenting old pictures for historical records
(including an oral history by Virginia Tech
scholars). Volunteers are asked to share their
pictures which will be scanned at the Center
and will be kept at the Foundation for future
use.

Mini Golf, coordinated with Fairfax
County Police Department and the Greater Merrifield
Business Association
Location:
3001 Chichester Lane, Fairfax, Virginia
22031 (Fairhill Elementary School)
Time:
1:45 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
Fairfax
County Police Department and the Greater Merrifield
Business Association would like to take this
opportunity to invite area children to enjoy
a round of golf with mentors in the community.
A school bus will pick up the children at Fairhill
Elementary School, take them to the Jefferson
District Park and then return them to the school.

8.
Low Impact Development/Green Roof Tour, coordinated
with the Yorktowne Square Condominiums
Location:
2905 Charing Cross Road, Falls Church (Yorktowne
Square office)
Time:
9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The
Yorktowne Square members are asking for up to
6 volunteers to help weed, plant and mulch the
certified habitat and the rain garden at the
Yorktowne Square Condominiums. From 12 p.m.
-1 p.m. volunteers are welcomed to join Jeanette
Stewart on a tour of the green roof and rain
garden.

4. Park Projects, coordinated with
the Fairfax County Park Authority

All park projects are scheduled from 8 a.m.

Stream Valley: pruning site lines at trail
heads along stream valley

Stream Valley Trail: perform repairs and clean
up along the trail.

Lane: resurfacing woodchip trail from the
parking lot to the Off Leash Dog Run (320
ft X 8 ft - on the school site).
- Eakin
Community: replenish resilient material in
playground.
- Eakin
Community: reestablish drainage swales within
the park.
- Greenway
Downs: cut down bamboo along upper trail,
stack along roadside for pickup.
- Idylwood:
remove trash and debris from wooded areas.
- Jefferson
Village: cut down bamboo and clear deadwood,
vines, etc. from fence line.
- Pine
Spring: remove fallen limbs and deadwood from
wooded area between path, school and apartments,
and stack near road (Willow lane) for pickup.

Alliance is inviting volunteers to recycle their
old computers on October 23. There is a $10
fee for monitors.

Providence Players are a community theater group
who perform at the James Lee Community Theater.
Their next performance is Heaven Can Wait
and opens on October 15 and the Players would
like to invite the community to an evening of
entertainment. They will be promoting the Providence
District VolunteerFest event.
