Mr.
Chairman: For more than 25 years, Volunteer Fairfax
has been the heart of volunteerism in Fairfax County.
The organization has matched the skills and interests
of volunteers and donors to the needs of local nonprofit
organizations - "helping to build a better community
through service." Through a variety of programs
and services, Volunteer Fairfax strengthens the capacity
of nonprofit members and offers meaningful volunteer
opportunities for our citizens.
As
you know Mr. Chairman, Providence District has played
an active role in contributing to the spirit of volunteerism,
in conjunction with Volunteer Fairfax. This year, we
participated in its 10th annual VolunteerFest event
to showcase the spirit of volunteerism through community
driven projects.
The
projects sponsored throughout Providence District would
not have been possible without the contribution of community
leaders, volunteers and sponsors. I would like to take
this opportunity to acknowledge and thank members of
the 2004 Providence District VolunteerFest planning
committee. The members are:
Linda
Byrne - Friends of Oakton Library; Peter Kelsey - EcoStewards
Alliance; Joanne Malone - Providence Park representative;
Officers Piper, Yarbrough and Campbell - Fairfax County
Police Department: McLean Police Station crime prevention
officers; Kevin Warhurst - Greater Merrifield Business
Association; Jeanette Stewart - Yorktowne Square Condominiums;
Donna Fleming - Human Services Council; Jennifer Cooper
and Mantua Kid Care; Marlene Blum - Chair, Health Care
Advisory Board; Hope Danielson - INOVA; Veronica Ruiz
- Kingsley Commons Family Resource Center; Chip Gertzog
- Providence Players; Lee Betton, Eric Kugler and Joyce
White - James Lee Community Center Club House; Dave
Eckert and Ed Henderson - Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation.
Lastly, this year's event would not have been a success
without Renee Atkinson and Mary-Litton Thorton of Volunteer
Fairfax for facilitating when we came across obstacles.
Lastly, to my office for hosting a food drive for the
Capital Area Food Bank.
The
diversity of the projects that showcased the spirit
of volunteerism in Providence District was a learning
experience for those who participated and contributed
to this process. Thanks again to everyone for a great
event.
