Therapeutic Recreation Internships

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Fairfax County Community Recreation Services Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) Internship Programs. We are extremely excited to have you interested in interning with our organization. An internship with our organization is rewarding and challenging.

TRS provides comprehensive recreation and leisure services for individuals with social, emotional, cognitive, and physical limitations. Programs are designed to develop leisure related functional abilities; encourage participation in a variety of recreational opportunities; promote restoration, acquisition, and application of leisure skills, knowledge, and attitudes; enhance independent functioning; promote integration in community recreation programs; and enhance social image through increased community interaction. All interns are exposed to these comprehensive services. These experiences will enable you to grow professionally as well as personally, and provide you with a knowledge of programming in community recreation for individuals with disabilities.

Supervision:

The agency currently has several Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists employed year round. Interns will be directly supervised by the program manager. A Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) will review all required T.R. interventions or practices as often as possible. Interns will be required to meet bi-weekly with a T.R. internship supervisor.

Opportunities

Fairfax County Community and Recreation Services, Therapeutic Recreation offers junior and senior internship programs during the spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Philosophy of Fairfax County Therapeutic Recreation Internship

  • Students and staff are engaged in mutually beneficial learning experience.
  • Professional education is an ongoing experience for which each individual musttake personal responsibility.
  • Supervision is not designed to make up for academic deficits. Students with content-based questions are expected to use library resources to answer these kinds of questions before bringing them to a clinician for clarification.
  • Although the content or behavioral based knowledge of therapeutic recreation is important, developing professional confidence and identification of strengths is also important.
  • The ultimate goal of the fieldwork experience is to provide a setting in which the student can grow and mature into an independently functioning therapeutic recreation specialist. Such growth is generally fostered by a supportive environment in which the student feels free to experiment, problem solve, and occasionally fail. The staff is committed to providing this type of environment, with the expectations that the student will use it responsibly, thoughtfully, and professionally.
  • We are Therapeutic Recreation Specialist because we regard our profession as a lifelong commitment and as an exciting challenge. It is a commitment and challenge we look forward to sharing with you.
