Summer RecPAC Inclusion
Recreation is Inclusive
Eligibility: School-age children (grades 1-6), with disabilities. Individuals must be a resident of Fairfax County, Falls Church City, or Fairfax City. Participants in this program are expected to maintain the RecPAC general rules of conduct.

Program: The program is designed to provide individuals with the opportunity to engage in a variety of recreation activities with non-disabled peers in large group situations. Activities offered include: sports, fitness, crafts, games, movies, music, story-telling, and special events. Community outings are offered throughout the program.
Activities are selected that provide opportunities for the individual to:
- socialize and interact with peers
- increase or maintain their physical fitness
- learn new leisure skills
- self-initiate play

About Inclusion:
Often parents want to know if their children is ready for an inclusion program. To determine if full inclusion in the RecPAC program is right for your child, please consider the following:
- the RecPAC program is attended by large numbers of children
- the staff to participant ratio is 1:8 at the inclusion sites
- there are a variety of activity choices available to children
- both structured and unstructured activities are offered and require children to demonstrate independent leisure skills and self-initiation of activities
- often activities are presented in a large group environment; this requires extensive group interaction
- the environment is highly stimulating and is conducive to individuals who can maintain, with or without assistance, emotional and self-control

Application and Enrollment:
The following steps need to be completed to enroll a child in Summer Programs:
- Complete and submit the application and intake information form to the TRS offices. All incoming application are dated upon request.
- Your child's application request and intake information are reviewed.
- Staff discuss accommodations needs prior to attendance.
Please Note: If accommodations are required, you must submit the application and request accommodations 30 days in advance of Summer Programs.

General Rules of Conduct:
Individuals enrolled in the program are expected to maintain general conduct which include:
- sign in and out on the daily attendance form
- stay in your assigned group
- must inform the leader before leaving the RecPAC Program
- show respect for others in what you do and say
- be involved in as many activities each day as possible
- listen to the RecPAC leaders and follow directions to the best of your ability
- try very hard to maintain self-control even when upset
- take care of your personal belongings
- play safely and have fun

Types of Accommodation Provided?
The accommodations are based on the needs of the child and the purposes of the program.

To effectively accommodate your child, Therapeutic Recreation Staff provide the following basic accommodations:
- Staff Training: facilitation styles, communication methods, behavior redirection, modification/adaptation of activities
- Consultation from TRS Specialists for the purposes of facilitating effective participation in structured programs
- Provide sign language interpreters and other alternative communication devices
- Assistance and hands on support if required
All requests for accommodations must be made 30 days in advance.

What is the staff to participant ratio?
- The ratio of the RecPAC Program is 1:25
- TRS support staff are located at each selected Inclusion location; there is 1 TRS staff to support 8 children with disabilities.

How are children grouped during activities?
- The children are grouped by grade level (1st - 3rd graders and 4th - 6th graders)

Do the staff give out medications or handle personal care/hygiene?
- Staff are provided with basic medication administration training and will administer medication or medical procedures with proper authorization from the Health Department and the families physician.
- Staff will not handle any personal care/hygiene

What are the ages of the children at the center:
- The age range is of children is 6 - 13 (grades 1-6)
- Eligibility is based on school year requirements:
- Your child must have completed kindergarten and through graduation of 6th grade

How will other children accept my child (will they be nice/play/pay attention)?
- Staff are trained to assist your child with participation in group activities and to facilitate play with children with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.
- Generally, children with disabilities have no problems developing friendships with other children at the center.
- In our programs we use a buddy system to promote a cooperative environment

How will support and accommodations be determined?
- Parents receive a telephone call one week prior to the program to discuss your child's strengths and needs.
- A recreation participation assessment is completed the first week of the program and will provide additional information regarding accommodation needs.
- Based on information gathered from the phone interview and the assessment, the staff will develop an accommodation plan that supports your child's leisure experience.
- The staff will provide modifications and adaptations to ensure that your child can participate to the best of his/her ability.

Are the children allowed to leave the site?
- The program is a drop in center, children are free to sign-in and out at their discretion.

What are the locations of the site?
- Inclusion sites are located at various regions throughout the county Sites that are designated as inclusion sites are specially selected to provide the best opportunities for your child.
Therapeutic Recreation does not provide transportation for this program.
