Access Program

ACCESS: Connecting individuals with disabilities to community leisure opportunities.

Fairfax County department of Community and Recreation Services (CRS) provides leisure and recreation programs which are open and accessible to all Fairfax County residents. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to participate in all programs offered by the Department. To facilitate your inclusion, you may request auxiliary aids and services. Every effort will be made to provide any reasonable accommodation required for participation.

Activity Information: CRS publishes a schedule of activities quarterly in the Recreation Magazine. The magazine can be obtained at all Fairfax County Libraries, the offices of Fairfax County Department of community and Recreation Services (CRS), CRS Community Centers and CRS Senior Centers.

How to Apply: Accommodation Specialists are available to assist and advise individuals concerning program placement and to discuss any accommodations that may be necessary for participation. To effectively coordinate the required accommodations and to reserve a program slot, we required the application be returned to the Leisure Enterprise Division at least two weeks prior to the start of the program. Space for most programs is limited and classes usually fill up quickly, so please return your information promptly.

  1. Complete the registration form in the Recreation magazine.
  2. Check the ADA Accommodations box if you need an accommodation.
  3. Return the Completed registration form to the Leisure Enterprise Division.
  4. Staff will contact you to discuss accommodation requirements.

Reasonable Accommodations: Accommodations include taking steps to welcome individuals with disabilities to enable involvement in the activities enrolled. These steps include but are not limited to: providing accessibility modifications, when possible changing policies and procedures, acquiring necessary auxiliary aids, adapting communication methods and promoting increased consumer relations through advisory board input, staff training, and technical assistance. Additional accommodations may include:

  • relocating an activity to an accessible area
  • modifying instructions and activity directions
  • using visual ques
  • providing a leisure coach
  • supplementing existing staff
  • providing adapted equipment or making equipment modifications
  • providing interpreters

Request for accommodations must be made 10 working days prior to the activity or even in which you wish to participate. Failure to request an accommodation within the times specified may limit our ability to complete the request.

  • If participation accommodations and/or alternative information formats are needed in accordance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), please call (703) 324-5532 at least 10 working days in advance of the registrations deadline or event (whichever is earlier).
  • Individuals using a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf should call (703) 222-9693 for further information or to request participation in accordance with ADA.
