Summer Programs for Children with and without Disabilities


Summer RECQuest Camp
For School-age Children

RECQuest is an affordable all-day program for children in grades first through sixth. Activities include having fun while participating in arts and crafts, cooperative games, socializes, community serve projects, field trips and much more. RECQuest begins immediately following the close of schools and is operated Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at seven locations in Fairfax County. Register your child or children for the entire 11 weeks, weekly, or any combination of weeks. Space is limited. For a list of locations, and to register, please call 703-324-5555, TTY 711. Ask about RECQuest for children with disabilities. The cost is $70 per child, per week. Sliding fee scale is available.

Summer Recreation Camps
For Individuals with Disabilities

Program activities include sports, fitness, arts and crafts, cooperative games, board games, music, drama, and special events. Special events and community outings are offered which include swimming, bowling, hiking, and special events. Each week activities are planned and selected to compliment a specific theme or focus of the week. Staff ratios are 1:4 in the contained settings and 1:8 at the targeted inclusion sites. Age Appropriate activities are modified and adapted to the ability and skill level of the participant in a safe and caring environment. The Adventure, Leisure, and Explorer elementary programs are licensed childcare programs.

To be eligible for these programs a participant must be a resident of Fairfax County, Fairfax City, or the City of Falls Church. Summer programs begin the first week in July and continuing through the second week in August. The following is a list of the available programs:

Adventure Programs provide structured activities that activities that are fun and challenging and focus on enhancing social skills for children with learning disabilities, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADD, ADHD) and emotional disabilities. Participants must be school-age children, ages 5 – 12 (must have completed kindergarten). The program is operated Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at two locations. Transportation is not provided. For a list of locations or to register, please call 703-324-5532, TTY 711. The fee is $410 for all six weeks or you may register by the week. There is a sliding fee scale available.

Leisure Programs (developmental disabilities) provide structured activities that are fun and challenging and focus on enhancing leisure skills leisure for children ages 5 – 12 (must have completed kindergarten) and teens (13-17) and young adults (18-21 through graduation) for individuals with mental retardation, autism, multiple disabilities, or other cognitive disabilities. The program is operated Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at seven locations. Transportation for this program is included in the fee and provided to and from home by FCPS buses. The fee is $410 for all six weeks or you may register by the week. There is a sliding fee scale available.

Explorer Programs (physical disabilities) which offer five awesome days of fun and adventure and focus on enhancing leisure skills for children ages 5 – 12 (must have completed kindergarten) and teens (13-17) and young adults (18-21 through graduation) for individuals with cerebral palsy, spina bifida and visual impairments. The program is operated Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at four locations. Transportation is provided to and from home by FCPS buses. The fee is $410 for all six weeks or you may register by the week. There is a sliding fee scale available.

Rec-PAC and Rec Quest Summer - Inclusion Program
RECQuest Inclusion Program offers week sessions of fun and exciting activities. This program provides youngsters with disabilities the opportunity to engage in a variety of recreation activities with non-disabled peers in large group situations. Participants must be in grades 1 through 6 (must have completed kindergarten). The program is operated Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at multiple community center locations. Transportation is not provided. There is a sliding fee scale available.
