Hollin Hall Senior Center
Celebrating 25 Years of Service to the Community
1983 - 2008

It’s been 25 years since Hollin Hall Senior Center, 1500 Shenandoah Road, Alexandria, opened its doors in the Mt. Vernon Community at the old Hollin Hall School. The public is invited to join in a special ceremony on Thursday, January 31, 2008 to look back over some of the major events over the years. The celebration will officially kickoff at 1:30 p.m. with past members, community leaders, elected officials, and the Hollin Hall Advisory Council offering remembrances of times past and opening a time capsule sealed to be opened on this day. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony.

After the Hollin Hall School closed in 1983, Fairfax County used three rooms to open a senior center in January 1983. The center served 35 people. Today, the center has 1,900 seniors registered serving approximately 190 seniors per day with 17 rooms. Several participants from when the senior center opened are still involved in center activities, including Carla Convery, Beatrice Keen, Rina Olschner, Chuck Phifer and Jim White.

The center services Fairfax County residents 55 years or older and offers a variety of programs and activities for participants to choose from including health and wellness and fitness programs, financial planning, and wellness discussions, healthy cooking classes, arts and crafts classes, Tai Chi, yoga, dancing, computer internet access, trips and tours, and is a site for Adult Continuing Education. Lunch is available with a suggested donation between $1 and $5 based on age and income. Reservations must be made in advance. Transportation may be available by Fastran bus at a nominal charge.

Hollin Hall Senior Center is one of 16 programs for senior adults operated by the Dept. of Community and Recreation. Membership is free. For a list of these programs and monthly activity schedules, visit the website at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/rec and click on senior services or call 703-324-5544, TTY 711.

Celebrating the Past. Enjoying the Present. Inspiring the Future.
