Fairfax County Teen Centers Kick
Off
Cell Phone Collection Drive
Do you have a couple of old cell phones lying around and you don’t know what to do with them? Give them to a good cause — Cell Phones for Soldiers. Your old cell phone can help a soldier stay in touch with family without calling collect.
Fairfax County Community and Recreation Teen Centers are asking people to make a small sacrifice of support by donating their used cell phones and any accessories, providing families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas.
The Cell Phones for Soldiers program works
to turn old cell phones into minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S.
troops. Your donation is tax deductible. You can download a
tax-deductible receipt from www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.
It’s
free and convenient to turn in your used cell phones. The following is

The phones will be sent to ReCellular,
which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone – enough to
provide an hour of talk time in pre-paid calling cards to soldiers
abroad. According to ReCellular, Americans will replace an estimated
130 million cell phones this year. The majority of these phones either
discarded or stuffed in a drawer – most people don’t realize that the
small sacrifice of donating their unwanted phones can have a tremendous
benefit for a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers.
Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany
Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then,
the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $2
million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling
cards to soldiers serving overseas.
The Cell Phones for Soldier Campaign
will be and ongoing effort for our teens. For more information, please
contact Hector Collazo, regional program coordinator, Fairfax County
Community and Recreation Services’ Teen Services Division at
703-704-6796, TTY 711.
