On Wednesday, January 30, 2008, the Fairfax County Department of Community and Recreation Services will open the Kingstowne Center for Active Adults, 6488 Landsdowne Center in Alexandria. The Grand Opening will be held from noon to 2 p.m. with the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Honored guests will be Fairfax County Chairman of the Board of Supervisor Gerry Connolly, Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay, and past-Lee District Supervisor Dana Kauffman. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony. The public is invited to join in the celebration.
As the first wave of baby boomers edges toward retirement, evidence shows that Baby Boomers are more health conscious than their parents. Boomers, ages 50 and above, are searching for different kinds of activities and leisure programs to keep active.
The vision for the new center is to create lifetime leisure opportunities for active adults. As older adults move forward to the third chapter of their lives, the Kingstowne Center will provide leisure opportunities to enhance and promote an active and healthy lifestyle. Programs and activities will be tailored to meet the needs of the participants, and reflect current issues that the Boomers are facing.
The Kingstowne Center serves Fairfax County residents ages 55 years or older. The center is a place for people to have fun, meet new friends, and expand their horizons by discovering new ways to work, new things to do, and new goals to pursue. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from health and wellness and fitness programs, financial planning, and wellness discussion, healthy cooking classes, arts and crafts classes, Tai Chi, yoga, dancing to computer internet access, trips and tours, and opportunities to socialize and stay connected to your community. Admission is free. Lunch is available with a suggested donation between $1 and $5 based on age and income. Reservations must be made in advance. Transportation may be available by Fastran bus at a nominal charge.
Kingstowne Center for Active Adults is one of 16 programs for senior adults operated by the Dept. of Community and Recreation. Membership is free. For a list of these programs and monthly activity schedules, visit the website at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/rec and click on senior services or call 703-324-5544, TTY 711.
