Lights On Afterschool
Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services will
join over 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans in celebrating
afterschool programs as part of the Afterschool Alliance's 10th
annual Lights On Afterschool program on Thursday, October
21. This nationwide event calls attention to the importance
of afterschool programs and the resources required to keep the lights on
and the doors open.
Too many children -- 15.1 million -- are missing out on afterschool
opportunities. Participate in Lights On Afterschool and help call
attention to this important issue. Lights On Afterschool
celebrations will be held at Community Centers, Teen Centers, Computer Learning Centers
(CLCP) and Computer
Clubhouses all over the county. Event times and themes will
vary. Sample activities include:
Annandale Terrace CLCP 3 – 5 p.m.
- Making posters on the importance of after school programs and what it means to the kids and participants
- Making light bulbs and coloring them
Bailey’s Community Center 5:30 – 7 p.m.
- Guest Speakers
- After School slide show
- Tour of the facility
- After School program video
- Art exhibit
- Karate Demonstration
- Essay and Poem Readings
- Refreshments
Chantilly CLCP 3 – 5 p.m.
- Participate in a financial literacy game for Lights On After School
Culmore CLCP 3 – 6 p.m.
- Open house with A Halloween Decorations and Masks
- A visit from Fairfax County Police and Fire Departments
Gum Springs Community Center 4 – 6 p.m.
- An artist from the Lorton Workhouse will come and help develop an art gallery that will be displayed to the community
- The teens will have a dance performance for the community also
- Refreshments
Herndon CLCP 4 – 6:30 p.m.
- Elementary students will do Light Build Art coloring and decoration
- Recording Elementary students thoughts about after school programs to make a short video clips
- Older students will work on group projects using PowerPoint and posters. The project will be including giving inputs of what they think about after school programs; give suggestions to improve after school programs and what can an after school program do to make it more fun while learning.
Huntington Community Center 5 – 7 p.m.
- Family Dinner
- After school program skit
- Arts/crafts color and display light bulbs
Hybla Valley CLCP 4pm to 6pm
- Kids can color/decorate LOAS light bulbs using Pixie, then print and post around the room
- Parents are invited to see latest CLCP technology projects
James Lee Community Center 4 – 7 p.m.
- Open House (guests are free to explore and observe after school programming as it occurs)
- Guest Speaker on Gang Prevention (Mr. Edward Ryan, Fairfax County Gang Prevention Coordinator)
- Computer Clubhouse Open House featuring Robotics
- Karate Open House (guests are welcome to sit-in/observe lesson)
- Screening of Student Public Service Announcements in Theatre
- Refreshments and Fairfax County Youth Survey review/discussion
Kingsley CLCP 3 – 6 p.m.
- Kids can color/decorate LOAS light bulbs using Pixie, then print and post around the room
- Parents are invited to see latest CLCP technology projects
Mott Community Center 4 – 6 p.m.
- Computer Clubhouse Skype with Panama & Costa Rica
- Guest Speaker-Electrical Engineer Bell from Mathnasium
- Lego Design
- Refreshments
Murraygate CLCP 5 – 7:30 p.m.
- Parents are invited to the center to spend a day as a student; all activities will be run by members
- Outdoor activities including "Parent/child races & flower planting"
- Inside the center students will be assisted by parents to research the monthly theme "Robotics"
Pinn Community Center 3 – 6 p.m.
- Participants will sign the after school pledge as well as complete a Lights on After School craft project
- Refreshments
Southgate Community Center 3:30 – 6 p.m.
- Coloring station (LOAS light bulb)
- Discussion groups about afterschool importance & relevance
- Game stations with board games
- Team building activities
- Family pizza party
- Family Bingo
Willston Multicultural Center 4 – 6 p.m.
- Essays on the Importance of our After School Program
- Girls Ballet Dance
- Walking Robot Display by Clubhouse
- Boys Dance
- Refreshments
