Organizations and Volunteers Needed to
Feed Kids This Summer
In preparation for the 2009 Summer Meals Program for kids, CRS is
seeking community and faith-based organizations to operate a summer meals
program for kids during the summer. During the school year, nutritious
meals are available through the schools’ lunch and breakfast programs.
However, those programs end when school ends for the summer. Fortunately,
CRS sponsors the Summer Meals for Kids program, which provides free
nutritious meals to eligible children while school is closed for the
summer.
When an organization agrees to become a meal sites, they provide the location and volunteers to serve the meals. CRS and USDA provide the meals at no cost to the organization. Training an ongoing support is also provided.
Meal sites may be located in a variety of settings for example public and private schools, housing developments and apartment complexes, parks, churches, day camps, summer activity programs, and refugee resettlement centers to name a few. As a summer meals site, organizations receive two meals per weekdays that are prepared and delivered. Organizations can elect to serve breakfast and lunch, some may only serves lunch (no meals served July 4). If your organization is interested in becoming a meal site, please contact Vicki Greene at 703-324-5504, TTY 711 or send and e-mail to Vicki.greene@fairfaxcounty.gov.
