FCRHA Seeks Public Comment on Proposed Amendment to Housing Waiting List Preference System
From Monday, June 22 until Monday, July 6, the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) will be accepting public comment on a proposed amendment to the FCRHA’s waiting list preference system that would exempt households with an income below 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI) from the rent burden preference.
Background: The proposed amendment follows a one-year pilot program approved in 2008 by the FCRHA that allowed households with incomes below 50% AMI to automatically qualify for the existing rent burden preference. Prior to this pilot phase, households not spending more than 30% of their household income on housing costs did not receive a preference for carrying a rent burden. The amendment is an additional means to helping Fairfax County end homelessness. It will allow those with low incomes (i.e., homeless persons and those doubled up in housing or renting a room and therefore not paying more than 30% of their income on rent and utilities) to qualify for this waiting list preference.
A copy of the proposed amendment is available online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/rha. HCD staff will provide a summary of comments received during the public comment period at the FCRHA’s meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 23.
Written comments should be sent to the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development, Attention: Vincent Rogers, Management Analyst, 3700 Pender Drive, Suite 200, Fairfax, Virginia 22030-6039 (Telephone: 703-246-5152, e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org, TTY: 703-385-3578). Written comments should be received at the above address by 4:30 p.m., July 6, 2009.
