The COA and You!

The Fairfax Area Commission on Aging (COA) holds a public meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, except August, at 1:00 p.m., at Supervisor Bulova's office, Braddock Hall (9002 Burke Lake Road, Burke, VA 22015, adjacent to the Kings Park Library). There is a public comment period at the beginning of each meeting.

The Fairfax Area Commission on Aging was created by the Board of Supervisors in March 1973. It is comprised of 12 members -- 1 member from each magisterial district, 1 at-large member, and 2 members appointed from the City of Fairfax and the City of Falls Church. Current members include:

Mission

The mission of the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging (COA) is to maximize the independence of elderly residents in the Fairfax area by:

Promoting measures to enable older persons and their families to take care of their own needs and wants;
Encouraging the private sector to develop a market appropriate to meet the needs of elders and their families;
Encouraging the county to respond to the needs of elders when local government is the most effective and efficient in meeting the need or when the county is the appropriate provider of last resort;
Identifying legislative issues for consideration by the Board of Supervisors.

Objectives of the Commission

To provide information concerning services and activities for the aging;
To act as a clearinghouse and referral point for matters affecting the aging;
To serve as liaison between the county and other governmental, public, and private groups concerned with aging issues;
To inform the community of the needs of the aging and of the agencies and activities that exist to serve them;
To promote programs for the benefit of the aging through public and private agencies;
To propose and recommend to the Board of Supervisors and the cities of Falls Church and Fairfax legislative and budgetary actions to accomplish necessary tasks.
