Employment Services (SCSEP)

WHAT IS THE SENIOR COMMUNITY SERVICE EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (SCSEP)?

The Senior Community Services Employment Program is a federally subsidized employment training program that provides temporary part-time work experience and job training in community services activities for people age 55 and over who have limited income.  It is often called the Title V Program because it is funded under Title V of the Older Americans Act of 1968.

Participants (enrollees) are assigned to work experience training positions in nonprofit and public agencies (work sites) which provide services to other older persons as well as to the entire community.

HOW CAN THE PROGRAM ASSIST YOU?
Program participants benefit from:
  • Additional Income: Enrollees earn an hourly training stipend while on the job.

  • Employment Counseling: Each individual is given professional assistance in evaluating their prior work experiences, personal strengths and assets relative to employment, and their career goals.  An individualized employability plan is developed to help reach those goals.

  • A Free Physical Examination: A free physical examination is provided both before enrollment into the program and annually.

  • Reentry into the Work Force: Participants gain current work experience, to restore social and personal confidence that comes from community involvement, and to create new careers.

  • On-the-Job Training: Participants upgrade old skills and learn new job skills.

  • Enhanced Job Search Training: Job search training assists enrollees who are ready to graduate from the SCSEP and enter the competitive job market.  Through job club participation enrollees learn resume preparation, interviewing skills and job search techniques; and are provided with job leads.

  • Other Benefits:
    •   Information and referral to needed community resources that could help solve problems such as transportation, housing, etc.
    • Classroom training to upgrade technical skills while continuing to earn a training stipend.
    • Supportive services as needed, continuing education opportunities and consumer information such as social security benefits, income tax requirements, nutrition, personal and emotional health, etc.

WHAT KINDS OF JOBS ARE AVAILABLE?
Current worksite positions include outreach workers, library aides, senior citizen recreation center aides, senior employment assistants, casework drivers, Medicaid clerical workers, housing assistants, benefits workers, senior citizen program aides, and legal assistants. Worksite positions can be developed to meet an applicant's needs.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
