Volunteer Opportunities with
Community and Recreation Services

Volunteers are an integral part of daily operations and help provide activities in all programs offered by the Department of Community and Recreation Services. Volunteers may commit to short-term projects or long-term projects. Potential volunteers must be at least 18 years old, complete a background, and participate in training. Work with people with disabilities:

Therapeutic Recreation Services needs volunteers. Volunteers assist individuals with disabilities at recreation programs throughout Fairfax County. Day, evening, weekday and weekend opportunities are open for individuals to work with adult, teen, and children's programs. You must be at least 15 years of age and complete a personal interview and criminal background check. A negative TB test is required to work with children 12 and under. Training is provided. Therapeutic Recreation Services is looking for young people to commit to six Saturdays teaching swimming safety to young people with disabilities. In return for volunteering, teens can receive a life guard certification for free. Volunteer requirements for free certificate:

  • Be 15 or older
  • Commit to six Saturdays during swim program hours
  • Must attend training prior to the program beginning

  • Assisting with special events or community days
  • Contributing/soliciting equipment
  • Sharing your professional knowledge and skills
  • Serving lunchtime meals to seniors
