Academy Rules and Regulations

  1. Vehicle Parking: Visitor and In-Service student parking is available in the side parking lot.
  2. Personal Appearance: Academy training is a duty assignment and, as such, all students will adhere to their departmental policy pertaining to grooming standards.
  3. Dress Code: Unless otherwise noted, the dress code for students attending In-Service training is casual attire. Jeans are permitted if they are clean and free from holes and patches. Shirts must have a collar. Bib overalls, shorts, painter pants, cutoffs, t-shirts, tank tops, flip flops and ball caps are not permitted.
  4. Identification: Departmental identification must be displayed at all times while in the building.
  5. Weapons: Personnel from non-member agencies may not carry weapons while attending training in the Academy building. Gun lockers and gun-clearing tubes are provided in the Academy lobby and downstairs hallway.
  6. Promptness: Students are required to report for all training on time. Students who are late may be denied access to training for that day. If this occurs, it will be reported to the affected student’s commander.
  7. Sign-in: All students shall sign in on the appropriate form upon their arrival to class each day and at any other time they are requested to sign in. Sign-in forms will be located on the clipboard in each classroom.
  8. Electronic Devices: All electronic devices brought into any class must be deactivated or switched to a non-audible mode.
  9. Classroom Regulations:
    • Coffee and sodas are permitted in classrooms except for the computer lab. Only water is permitted in the computer lab.
    • Outside reading material not connected with the training may not be read during class times.
    • Desktops will be cleared of all materials at the end of each day.
  10. Absences from Class: Students who must miss class hours must complete a sign-in/sign-out form. These forms can be secured from the In-Service office on the first floor of the Academy.
  11. Failure to Report for Scheduled Training: Because scheduled training is a duty assignment, students who fail to report or who miss training due to being late will be reported to their commander.
  12. Student Messages: Non-emergency messages will be posted on the main bulletin board, which can be found near the entrance to the student break room on the classroom level. Only emergency messages will be hand-delivered.
  13. Flag Raising: Persons entering or exiting the Academy main entrance during the raising or lowering of the United States flag and the flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia are asked to show proper respect by standing in place and placing their right hand over the heart. If in uniform with a hat on, a salute is proper.
  14. Computers: Computers are available to students and visitors for agency business and are located on the first floor of the Academy in the Professional Development Center. Use of any other computers without the permission of an Academy staff member is prohibited.
