Description
Provides inmates with routine and emergency health care in the Medical Section of an Adult Detention Facility. Conducts health histories on newly-admitted inmates. When necessary, makes referrals of inmates to the staff physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, mental health professional, or specialist in alcohol and drug abuse treatment. Determines the need for emergency hospital care. Ensures all medication is administered in accordance with standard operating procedures and as ordered by the authorizing authority.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from a school of nursing in a licensed practical nursing program plus one year of full-time experience providing hands-on health care.

Special Requirements
Possession of a current, valid license to work as a Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Description
Position is located in the Medical Section of the Adult Detention Facility. As the team supervisor, counsels, guides, directs, and supervises subordinates in the administration of appropriate and effective inmate health care, and participates in the development of procedures for delivery of health care. Oversees and administers routine and emergency health care to inmates. Ensures that subordinates adhere to agency operating procedures and health care standards. Ensures adequate staff coverage for all medical work stations. Ensures medications are properly received, stored, distributed, administered, and documented. Ensures that proper protective equipment is worn and used by staff, and oversees the proper disposal and destruction of soiled or contaminated clothing and equipment. Evaluates the work performance of subordinates. Serves as a liaison with community and family members.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing with a bachelor's degree in nursing; plus two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, including six months of supervisory experience.

Special Requirements
Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Prior to appointment, must complete a criminal background check, a polygraph examination, and a psychological examination to the satisfaction of employer. Must undergo a medical screening prior to starting work.
