The Medical Section at the Fairfax Adult Detention Center provides comprehensive health care to the inmate population that is in the care and custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. The average daily inmate population at the county jail is approximately 1,300. The facility processes 45,000 inmates per year. Correctional health care is recognized by the American Nurses Association as a nursing specialty that provides health care to a unique population. The correctional health nurse draws on all aspects of nursing care including assessment skills, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care. Correctional health nurses are often seen as the first line health care provider as opposed to the physician.
Qualifications
- Licensed to practice nursing in Commonwealth of Virginia or multi-state compact license
- 20 years of age
- Complete medical screening
- Polygraph examination
- Psychological examination
- Background investigation
